Trees are one of the most important aspects of a community or society. They contribute
significantly to the beauty and character of a locality. For example, an old elm tree or a
huge banyan is a delight and soothing sight for residents of a particular area.
Besides the aesthetic quality of trees, they are also fundamental in many critical aspects
of our lives. They are highly effective in reducing air and noise pollution, generate fresh
oxygen to the surroundings, are instrumental in bringing down the ambient temperature
and provide natural habitat for many, many forms of wildlife. It is also an important
contributor to prevent and minimize erosion and adding healthy nutrients to the soil.
It is a sad but true fact that more and more trees are being cut down or otherwise
despoiled to the forces of pollution, construction and other elements.

Fossil fuel is another fast reducing energy source being depleted at an alarming rate
today. It is estimated that almost 85% of today`s energy requirements is being furnished
by biodegradable fuels like kerosene, petrol, diesel and the like. Burning fossil fuels is
considered to be one of the most common factors leading to global warming. Also, it is
predicted that unless new oil-fields are discovered and tapped, the existing quantities of
fossil fuels is not expected to last for more that a couple of decades. All the more reason
to conserve them while alternative energy sources are being produced.

Water is an integral part of the existence of life on this planet. Over two-thirds of the
earth`s surface is covered by water. Yet, it is not widely known that the amount of
potable water is just a fraction of this. Even less known is the tremendous energy and
resources involved in converting non-potable water to its drinkable form. It is therefore
necessary to be aware of the need to conserve water and use it wisely. Much of the
methods prescribed are fairly easy and borrows from common sense. Making sure your
taps are fully closed, and checking faucets and taps for leaks are some these.

There needs to be a widespread and informed drive to protect our environment and
popularize eco-friendly drives in our localities. Simply the sight of a bushy tree, the
sound of the wind rushing through the leaves or the feel of gusts in our hair should be
more than enough that we have them.
